Customer

Based in Sweden, Smart Balancing Instrument AB develops and markets equipment for the balancing of heating and cooling systems. The customer’s tools communicate wirelessly with different types of terminals, mobile devices, PDAs, and laptops.

Challenge

Smart Balancing provides wireless balancing instruments to its end clients. The provided equipment measures the flow parameters in heating and cooling systems. To gain competitive advantage on the market, the customer wanted to offer its users flexible software packages to satisfy various balancing needs. Furthermore, it was important to develop software that could back up a wide range of handsets and terminals.

Applied Systems’ cooperation with the customer started back in 2003. At that time, the team was busy creating software and UI for the balancing instrument PFM 250 that supported pocket PCs controlled by Microsoft Windows Mobile. As new types of portable devices such as netbooks, smartphones and tablets appeared, it was necessary to develop software applications compatible with the latest technologies. Apart from technologies, the software itself should become more comprehensive, for example, it was supposed to offer project management facilities and online logging of measurement data.

The next paragraph describes the most recent Android-based solution developed by Applied Systems.

Solution

Since Applied Systems’ specialists were experienced in applications for balancing instruments, they easily met the deadlines and requirements set by the customer.

The Smart Balance Android app uses wireless connection to read, process, and store data from the measuring sensors of heating and cooling systems. It allows balancing the system by comparing and analyzing such parameters as temperature, pressure, and flow.

One of the prominent features of the Smart Balance app and all previously developed software applications is synchronization. Firstly, the user can save and load gathered data from a mobile device to a laptop or a PC and vice versa. Secondly, it is possible to connect to several sensors and take measurements simultaneously.

The Smart Balance app generates reports based on valve data. Measurement results are represented as tables and graphs.

The technology stack for this solution includes Android SDK and NDK, C++, Java, Apache Ant.

Results

The software applications provide improved communication and usability for the Smart Balancing measurement equipment. It has acquired additional features to ensure better workflow and flexibility. The user interfaces are easy to understand and operate; branded product versions can be created.

On the whole, the Applied Systems team has developed a special software ecosystem for the customer’s products, consisting of desktop and mobile applications, a software licensing system and a download system stored on the server.
