The customer is a leading Austrian-based provider of integrated hardware and software solutions for vehicle emission testing in the automotive industry with a staff of more than 6,000 people and facilities in 28 countries worldwide.

Almost any automated system, however complicated it may be, needs a component to visualize data flows, control the execution of tests and measurements or simply monitor activities. Data visualization techniques allow analyzing the current trends in real time and responding to any changes with adequate measures and in a timely manner. In automation, the importance of a data visualization and analysis component can hardly be overestimated as it is the primary diagnostic and debugging tool.

Being the key developer of the customer’s visualization system, Applied Systems was definitely among the most suitable candidates to face the challenge. Our team of software engineers considered the task thoroughly and designed a solution according to the customer’s requirements.

As the customer specializes in sophisticated multi-component engineering systems that run tests with numerous parameters and configurations on a 24/7 basis, emphasis has been placed on the simplified management of large data flows and consideration of specific emission testing requirements. The solution has been implemented as a plug-in for the currently existing visualization system using the C++ and COM technologies.

The developed plug-in:

• Receives and records data transferred at a high speed;
• Builds compound graphs in real-time mode;
• Ensures convenient comparison and monitoring of data from different sources both during the runtime and after the test is finished;
• Is independent and flexible enough to be used in other similar systems.

The new component allows the customer to visualize simultaneous data flows from different sources and facilitates data analysis building graphs that show dependencies and help calculate values and characteristics at particular time intervals.

All received data are saved in a readable format and can be loaded or printed any time.

Reportedly, the visualization and analysis plug-in has significantly reduced the time required for malfunction diagnostic and debugging.

Designed as an independent and self-sufficient component, the plug-in has been seamlessly integrated into a number of other customer’s projects with equal efficiency.
